Hilly Fields Football Club was formed when lads from Lewisham and the wider South East of London met up every Sunday morning at the Fields and with coats as goal posts hosted up to thirty-a-side games before going down to the pub.
Len Franklin, Ray Griffin and Larry Garnham were the club's first officers and following an ad in the local newspaper, they joined the Imperial League, division two.
And without the financial support of Fred Beal, who funded the purchase of the first set of kit, the venture would never have got going. As reward, fifty year old Fred was given one game as a mark of the club's appreciation.
